Story The icy North Atlantic, 1943. German wolf packs continue to wreak havoc with Allied shipping. A large convoy came under attack on 21 February, but the U-boats were kept at bay by escort vessels. That evening three ships were torpedoed by U-606, which was then damaged by an attack by the Polish destroyer Burza. The sub was forced to the surface, and detected by the radar of Campbell, a 327-ft. cutter. Campbell headed to ram the sub, opening fire, and when U-606 turned to avoid being rammed her diving rudder cut a gash in Campbell's starboard side. The cutter finally crippled the U-Boat with depth charges and gunfire. This mural depicts the moments just prior to the contact between Campbell and U-606.
